I have always loved textiles and making things. A BSc in Textiles from Heriot-Watt University lead nicely into a career in Fabric Technology within the lingerie industry working for many high street retailers and some of the UK's biggest brands. Life in the fast-paced fashion and textile industry was great, travellng to the Far East on sourcing trips, visiting manufacturing units and also enjoying the odd night out in Hong Kong's famous Lang Kwai Fong area not forgetting the shopping trips to London and Paris. 10 years passed in a flash and suddenly I was married with a baby on the way.
Time to take stock and rethink; the perfect time to go it alone and do something I love that works for me and my family. The great thing was, I wasn't technically 'alone'. With a good friend beside me to share the ups and downs of setting up a business, it made it seem an even more attractive prospect.
Life is crazy at the moment. Toddlers are great fun but combine that with the day-to-day job of running a business and there are just not enough hours in the day. But I still manage the odd run, night out and trip home to Scotland.
I really do think I have the BEST job in the world. I knew when I first saw my university tutor stitching the old-fashioned corset that I wanted a career creating wonderful lingerie. I spent the next three informative (and very fun) years studying Contour Fashion at De Montfort University, Leicester where I learnt all there is to know (or so I thought) about fashion design, making patterns, using lycra and laces, sewing and of course.. shopping!
Here I am, years later (ouch!) still doing all these things with the same enthusiasm and passion I had back then, just with a world more experience. Graduating in 1995, I was lucky to go straight into a job where my first project was to design a bra set for River Island – how brilliant! Since then I have spent my time designing lingerie and swimwear for lots of other high street stores, which included lots of travelling, sketching, fitting, sourcing fabrics and working with many talented people. All this has given me the skills and knowledge which I would now like to pass on and share with all you creative ladies out there. Every girl likes to make desirable things, don't they? I love attention to detail, creating layers and textures from sheer lace, embroidery and beautiful prints, adding delicate ribbons and sparkle, buttons and bows, bows, bows - don't get me started on bows!
Actually I DO have the best job in the world – because I love every minute of it.
